Hummingbirds 2011

This post displays my latest two Ruby-throated hummers. There is a subtle difference in posture in each. One is displayed on a lilac base that shows the beauty of natural lilac wood with bands of magenta coursing through the grain. The other bird is seen with a slightly less-upright posture at a rose leaning on a walnut burl base. Both  are painted in oils and made of tupelo. They are in private collections.

Humming Rose

We all know that hummingbirds are attracted to red flowers, why not roses?  This is the latest and perhaps the best hummingbird I have done. The bird and rose are of tupelo and painted in oils. The base is lilac. The stem is brass. It is life-sized. It is in a private collection. It won a third place ribbon and cash award at the 2011 Ward World Carving Championship.

This latest version shows a male eating from a  red flower. The  bird and flowers are of tupelo, the branch and leaves are brass, the base is mesquite.

It is in a private collection.

Archilochus colubris]

This full-sized sculpture depicts the delicacy of the flight of this gem of avian world. Hummingbirds are attracted to red flowers as seen in this generic wild flower.

The bird and flower are of tupelo, the stem and leaves are of brass and the base is walnut. It is in a private collection.

Hummingbird on Lilac

Archilochus colubris

This sculpture is of a full-sized male as it enters a lilac flower. The bird is a separate piece and moves with the wind.

The bird is tupelo and the base is lilac wood. It is in a private collection.

Archilochus colubris

This full-sized piece shows the beauty of the male as he stakes his claim on foxglove.

The bird is tupelo, the base is maple burl, and the stem is brass and tupelo. The piece separates for ease in transport. It has been purchased.

Archilochus colubris

This full-sized female ruby-throat has recently laid her eggs. The male will also take his turn at incubating.

The bird and nest are of tupelo, as are the branches. The base is walnut. The piece is in a private collection.

Lilac Hummingbird

Archilochus colubris

This distinctive piece is based on the beauty of a block of lilac wood with its layers of lavender heart-wood. The flower is a carved lilac bloom.

This piece is in a private collection.

Perched Hummingbird

Archilochus colubris

A ruby-throated hummingbird perches on a twig and contemplates its next destination. Interestingly, hummingbirds must fly wherever they wish to go – their legs are practically useless for walking.

This piece is in a private collection.

Hummingbird Family

Archilochus colubris

Two hummingbird parents visit with their offspring in their nest.

This carving received 3rd place at the 32nd Annual Ward World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition (2002), in the category of Novice Decorative Life-size Wildfowl – Songbirds A. It is in a private collection.
